The Bird Calls (Sam Sodomsky) Releases "Clockwork"
The Bird Calls, the indie folk project of New York-based musician, writer, and editor Sam Sodomsky, has released "Clockwork," the latest single from his upcoming album, Take Leave, arriving August 28 via Ruination Record Co.
Following the previously released "To Everything There Is A Ceiling," the new track leans into warm, understated folk-rock, pairing layered instrumentation with quietly reflective songwriting. Featuring guest backing vocals from Sofia Wolfson, "Clockwork" explores love, time, and the fragile moments when life unexpectedly seems to fall into place.
The song came together quickly after Sodomsky stepped away from a frustrating day and took a walk through his neighborhood without his phone. During the walk, a lyric that had been sitting in his notes for some time—"I guess that's why they call it clockwork"—began to take shape, and the rest of the song followed shortly after he returned home.
That balance of everyday observation and emotional honesty runs throughout Take Leave, which finds Sodomsky once again collaborating with producer Ryan Weiner. Unlike previous recordings, the pair embraced a more spontaneous, live-in-the-studio approach, building each song around performances of Sodomsky's vocals and guitar alongside Weiner's drumming before layering additional instrumentation themselves.
Inspired in part by Bruce Springsteen's songwriting process during the making of Born in the U.S.A., Sodomsky wrote an extensive collection of material before narrowing it down to an album that moves freely between styles while maintaining a unified emotional thread.
Across Take Leave, Sodomsky reflects on themes including love, loss, aging, meditation, and the uncertainties of making a life through music. Many of the songs are rooted in the idea of beginning again—accepting what has been left behind while carrying those experiences into whatever comes next.
To celebrate the album's release, The Bird Calls will play a short run of East Coast dates with Adeline Hotel, including stops in Massachusetts, Brooklyn, and Philadelphia.
